Inspirations-Miss Miller

Inspirations where a constant source of ideas throughout our thriller film as we thought drafting ideas from other successful films in the thriller genre and adapting them in a way appropriate for our thriller opening would make our film also successful as theses ideas are what made the initial film so successful. However i never completely copied a idea. I wanted to keep my film separate and give it its own identity as apposed from being constantly compared to the films that inspired me. The primary films that invoked many of my ideas where IT, Halloween and Saw.

IT

We took keen inspiration from Stephen Kings 'IT' to create our films antagonist. The clown mask used conforms to the conventions of hidden identity and creates the effect of fear and tension as the audience are scared of the unknown. We thought the contrapuntal idea of the clown killer was relatable to that of the audience with it being a common 'phobia' (name of film) amongst our teen audience as well as the conventions of a thriller film as a whole as the mysterious identity the mask provides creates an enigma as well as the tension within the film.

Halloween

We look to take inspiration from the popular thriller opening in Halloween. Where the P.O.V shot is used on the killer to create a sense of mystery and tension as we can see the killer walking around. We hope to use in in our thriller opening to show how the killer is watching the female victim. This will make the audience feel uneasy and create a tense atmosphere that we are constantly looking to portray in our thriller opening. This is relatable to the thriller genre as a sinister, tense atmosphere are always key within a thriller opening as it sets the scene for the film and keeps the audience in grossed in the narrative.

Saw

Much of our narrative was sourced from that of Saws. Where a victim; in our case a blonde, female one  (to conform to the generic thriller conventions) is kidnapped and executed in a twisted, unexplainable manner, which forms the enigma throughout the film about why she is killed. This creates a builds a relationship a audience have with the characters as they are more engrossed in the narrative they are therefore more susceptible to the tension and suspense within a film. It is relatable to the thriller genre as a suspenseful narrative is key to the tension and suspense that is in a film.

Looking into other films for inspiration was vary helpful in the planning of my thriller film as i was able to incorporate more conventional ideas allowing my thriller opening to appeal to my target audience of teens more. All the inspirations i have taken help to increase the ultimate tension/suspense within my opening through the use of increasing my antagonists profile.

  1. You have provided a brief recount of some of the inspirations you have taken from different films. You need to include paragraphs on mise-en-scene, editing and sound.

    1) Include paragraphs on remaining micro-elements
    2) Make sure you explain WHY for all points made
3)Relate all points back to the genre/audience and explain how a relationship can be built
    4) Make sure you explain how you will take these ideas and incorporate them within your sequence
    5) Include pictures of the films you are discussing
