Planning opening credits-Miss Georgiou

Credits are prominent in all films as well as just the thriller genre particularly as they inform the audience of everyone who was involved in the film, including the director, actors and producers.
Credits are important within a film as actors and director(s) within a film (usually following each other at the beginning of the credits) are common features for attracting attention to a film, therefore making them a necessary part of any modern motion picture.

When analysing Sevens opening sequence the first thing i was looking out for was the credit sequence, as i hoped to replicate this into my thriller opening given Sevens notoriously successful thriller opening. The credits appeared on screen in the following order Production company, director, actor, title of film, actors continued, casting, music, costumes, editing, production, camera operator, co-producer, producer, writing and the director again. As apposed to the Films title being first on the list it features fourth, following actors. This is because actors are the thing the audience are more drawn into as it has names that they are familiar with in such as Brad Pitt and the title of the film is vary important and so they need to put it in a order that it will be noticed in, this is the purpose of it being put following actors.

When analysing 'Se7en' the most noticeable effect was the font used. Its generic thriller style and size was conventional to that of the thriller genre. The contrasting white font on a black background was relatable to the battle between good and evil within the film and a style he hope to replicate and use in our thriller opening, however using a red font as apposed to white as red connotes danger, blood and anger, all of these relating to the thriller genre. As well as the colour of the font we also want to adopt a jerky, unstable movement when the credits are on screen. This creates a tense atmosphere keeping the audience uneasy and insinuates that there is some kind of mystery.

I also analysed 'shutter island' to expand my potential ideas i could have for thriller opening and i found that a series of controversial effect used. The one that jumped out at me the most was the spiral effect at 0.05 to 0.08. The effects of manipulation and unsuitability it oozed where effective in that in made the film appear unpredictable as it felt like i was being brainwashed. The effect of manipulation it presented was particularly effective in that it was relatable to the context of the film as well as the thriller genre. Where the narrative is about a man being manipulated into believing he is someone else.

My Opening credits:
After reviewing the opening credits of several films I have come to the conclusion that my credits will appear in the following order….
    Sandstorm productions
    Director- Joe smith
    Director of photography-Daniel Armstrong
Actors-Cara Gaffney, Daniel Armstrong, Joe Smith
    Film title-Phobia
    Editing director- Reggie Witham
    Producer- Sam Smith
    Co producer-Mark Abraham
    Costumes- Lara Walker
    Director of Sound-Joe Smith

Upon reviewing my credit sequence i am confident that it will be effective in making the film title and actors noticeable as it is in a identical if not vary similar order to that of a high budget movie such as Shutter island, which i have analysed.

The Font our group is hoping the achieve in our thriller opening sequence is a unstable, jagged writing similar to that of Microsoft words "Curlz MT as it provokes a made wrote effect suggesting that some unstable antagonist has wrote it, as well as the jovial curls at the end of the letters providing a contrapuntal effect relatable to that of our clown antagonist. Our group has also decided that red would be the best colour to use as it is striking and would draw attention to the credits, the film title in particular. Red also connotes death, blood and danger and therefore is why it is a thriller convention that he hope to achieve during our filming. The colour white was also a popular potential choice however our group concluded that although the mysterious and eerie feel it would portray was not appropriate for our opening as it would not stand out as opposed to other colours.

  1. This post demonstrates some understanding of why credits are important. You have analysed two sequences, but further discussion of the conventions, colours, effects and audience expectations of a narrative is needed, to demonstrate further understanding. Also aim to include video links to support the points that you have made.

You have also made a start in considering the style of font that you would like to include within your own sequence, but you need to include the image of the fonts, to support the points that you have made. Also aim to explain, how you will share your ideas with your group and how you will decide on one final design.
